Description
Bitter Leaf (Onugbu in Igbo, Ewuro in Yoruba) is a well-loved leafy vegetable known for its distinctive slightly bitter taste, which mellows beautifully when cooked. This dehydrated version is pre-washed to reduce bitterness while preserving flavor and nutrients.
It’s the star ingredient in traditional Bitter Leaf Soup (Ofe Onugbu), a rich Igbo dish typically made with assorted meats, fish, and cocoyam or achi as a thickener.
Bitter leaf is also widely valued in traditional medicine for its digestive and detoxifying properties.
Recipe tip: Rinse briefly before use if you prefer a milder bitterness, or use as-is for a more traditional, robust flavor.
